Seldén Mast gennaker furlers

Seldén introduces gennaker furlers

Gennakers and Code 0 sails have become increasingly popular over the past years. The ability to furl these sails, the way you furl a genoa, makes for a convenient way to increase sailing pleasure. Seldén will introduce newly developed furlers for gennakers and Code 0's during the boat shows this winter.

There will be a three model range covering 1,5 to 4,0 ton maximum working loads. Code 0 sails have a tensioned luff, and generate high loads. The range of furlers we introduce now will cover boats in the size 25-50' says (undersigned ).  With a Code 0 you can sail higher than with a gennaker, yet the power and acceleration achieved can be spectacular. It's like a turbo kicking in, says (undersigned) .

The furling systems are operated by an endless furling line running in a line driver drum. Flared feeder rings accommodate a variety of lead angles, and an internal line stripper disengages the rope from the drum when unfurling the sail.  All structural parts are reinforced by high strength Duplex® steel and in combination with composite parts the system becomes both strong and light.

The furling line usually leads all the way back to the cockpit and Seldén offer a fiddle block with double cam cleats making it easy to secure the rope. Racing sailors may prefer a shorter furling line operated by the foredeck crew.

Seldén's new furlers will be branded Seldén CX15, CX25 and CX40. “CX” stands for “Code X” which means they can be used for all types of Code sails, and the digits indicate the maximum working load in kN.

The Code 0 sail is relatively flat and therefore you can point higher compared to a gennaker. When sailing up wind it is subjected to substantial loads and therefore these sails are normally produced in Aramid® cloth. The gennaker is a fuller sail for reaching and it is made of Nylon® cloth. Both the gennaker and the Code 0 take over when the spinnaker cannot be carried any more. They do not need a spinnaker pole, lift or downhaul. Sailing off the wind become easy, more efficient and definitely more fun – which is appreciated by cruising and racing sailors.

Another application for the furlers is to hoist a stay sail in the genoa halyard and use it in combination with Code 0, gennaker or even a spinnaker .
